King Cole started doing this thing the other year where they split garments into three sections with each section being knitted in a different stitch. This one has stocking stitch and two variations of moss stitch separated by a basic lace. It's easy on the knitter for two reasons - you kind of can't get bored because it changes as soon as you're starting to and also the measuring is easy between smaller sections because they don't distort as much when you're holding them up.

This pattern has been knitted in King Cole Homespun DK. You'll need 3.25mm and 4mm needles along with between seven and eight buttons for each.
