These kind of patterns are what the yarn King Cole Riot Chunky was made for. It has the complex, bright variegations and looks incredible in large shawls. What I love about this pattern is that the lace work really stands out to make a practical and lovely statement accessory. 

You could also try knitting this pattern in King Cole Drifter Subtle Chunky, which is a drapey lovely yarn with a acrylic/cotton/wool mixture that is soft and squishable. Also, it has a very small wool content which might suit those with sensitive skin. 

Knitted using 7mm needles and some 7mm circular needles for the cowl.
